Chapter 1 Welcome

Welcome to the first in the series of Internet projects for Elementary Statistics, Eighth Edition. If you are reading this you have essentially completed the work for this project which is to find and become familiar with this Web site. However, we would like to tell you a little bit more about what is to come.

Each chapter in the textbook Elementary Statistics contains an Internet Project found here at this site. Each Internet Project will have you apply select techniques and analysis methods from the corresponding chapter to answer questions of a statistical nature. Along the way you will

• search for and collect data from other Web sites
• use visual tools to simulate complex experiments
• visit sites dedicated to statistics education and data collection

Some sites you will visit include

• a weather forecasting site (www.wunderground.com)
• a home run data site (www.homerunchase.com)
• an official US Government site (www.census.gov)
• the home page for a major statistics journal (www.amstat.org/publications/jse/)

For now you should bookmark the main project page for the Elementary Statistics site, you will be returning often. Before you leave, we recommend that you visit any of the sites listed above or any of the specific project pages in this site. In this way, you can see just how applicable your statistics course will be and how easily statistics lends itself to today’s technology. Have fun and good surfing!
