General Travel Tips

  • Ensure you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance, which includes hospital treatment and emergency repatriation to the UK.
  • Check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before travelling (www.fco.gov.uk) or call 020 7008 0232/0233.
  • Make a photocopy of your passport and flight tickets and leave with a friend or relative in the UK; it is also advisable to leave a full itinerary.
  • Check your passport expiry date (many destinations require a minimum of 6 months validity) and complete the next of kin details at the back. You should also make a note of the passport number, date and place of issue and keep this separately to your passport.
  • Always take enough and appropriate funds for your entire journey, many US banks will not accept Eurocheques or Sterling, hence Dollar traveller cheques are more sensible.
  • If in doubt as to visa requirements please contact the Consulate or Embassy for the country you are visiting. If you are a British Citizen you will be able to complete a visa waiver form on your flight that will allow you up to 3 months leisure travel (this may vary for British Dependent Territory Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject, British National Overseas or a British Protected Person).
  • Laws and customs vary between countries; so do the penalties for offenders. It is advisable to find out about local laws prior to your departure and remember to respect them.
  • Avoid any contact with drugs, more than half the British nationals detained abroad have been imprisoned for drug offences!
  • If hiring a car, be sure your licence is current, make sure you know the rules of the road, there may be on-the-spot fines for traffic offences.
  • As when at home, take care to avoid dangerous areas and look after your belongings. It is advisable to check with your accommodation provider as to which, if any, areas you should avoid.
