Major Issues
Eudora Welty’s many fictional portraits of her Mississippi Delta homeland have
lead to scholarly discussions of her work as Southern writing, and comparisons
to William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor. Critics note, however, that Welty
deals with universal themes and issues, such as complex familial relationships,
human isolation, and the challenges of communication. Welty has been praised
as a meticulous observer of external landscapes and internal mindscapes. Structural
critics note that narratorial monologue, in which the reader is invited to laugh
at or condemn the narrator, is one of her favored forms. Scholars have examined
the extent to which Welty’s fiction fits into the tradition of Southern Gothic
writing. Her work has also interested feminist scholars, who have examined Welty’s
portrayal of sexuality and matriarchies
