Major Issues

Guy Vanderhaeghe is a Canadian prairie regionalist, and his work is often compared with that of other prairie writers, both Canadian and American. Reviewers note the intense suffering that Vanderhaeghe’s characters endure. He presents moving portraits of mental and emotional anguish, especially isolation. Vanderhaeghe chronicles the many obstacles to human interaction and communication. Delusion and self-deception figure prominently in Vanderhaeghe’s stories. Critics have noted, however, that these bleak scenarios are leavened by the "subtle humor" which permeates Vanderhaeghe’s writing, which also often contains a celebration of heroic strength and dignity in the face of adversity.
