Major Issues

William Trevor’s employment of a distant, dispassionate narrative voice and his portrayal of isolated individuals leading seemingly meaningless lives have prompted comparison with fellow Irish writer James Joyce, and other 20th century modernists. Critics have observed that Trevor’s typically middle-class characters are dissatisfied and unfulfilled—emotionally and spiritually. Daydreams and delusional fantasies offer the only escape from their dead-end jobs and relationships. Reviewers praise Trevor’s carefully detailed descriptions and development of atmosphere which bring his characters and fictional worlds to life. Scholars note that the sense of disintegrating social and community structures forms an unsettling backdrop in many of his stories.
