Major Issues

"Domestic archaeology" is one critic’s description of Elizabeth Tallent’s overarching literary project. Complex familial relationships are a predominant subject in her fiction: both husband and wife, and parent and child. It has been observed that Tallent explores the "tensions" in her fictional scenarios, which can either balance or upset domestic dynamics. Characters and couples are torn between their equally strong yearnings for stability and for change, for example. Critics and reviewers have noted that plot is subservient to imagery in Tallent’s stories. Her characters and settings are carefully drawn and detailed, however. The important role of daydreams and fantasy in Tallent’s stories has also been discussed.
