Major Issues

The works of Robert Louis Stevenson challenge the conventional division of fiction into either popular fiction or serious literature. Stevenson’s intricately plotted tales have been gripping readers for more than a hundred years. They have also continued to grip literary critics. Stevenson’s deliberate decision to write against the naturalistic trend of his time resulted in the initial critical dismissal of his work by some as escapist adventure tales. Stevenson did not view the adjective "escapist" as derogatory, however. His insistence that stories must "satisfy the nameless longings of the reader" and obey the "ideal laws of the daydream" foreshadows 20th century psychological and reader-response theories. Scholars look back to his effective use of multiple, unreliable narrators and careful manipulation of voice. Other critics have pointed out Stevenson’s consideration of serious issues within his writing, including nationalism, colonialism and the nature and effects of evil.
