Major Issues

Many reviewers and critics have commented on the contrast between the quantity of Katherine Anne Porter’s literary output—fewer than 30 stories and just one novel—and the quality of that work, which has been described as painstakingly perfect. Porter’s style is challenging for readers. It is characterized by dense imagery, complex symbols, temporal fragmentation, ambiguous irony, and experimental focalization and perspective. The interplay between illusion and reality, and between memory and imagination have been identified as major themes in Porter’s writing. Critics have also discussed her presentation of women’s social roles, mortality, alienation, and familial legends and delusions. Her short fiction has been compared to that of Flannery O’Connor.
