Major Issues
Literary historians look back to trace Gustave Flaubert’s personal and literary
influence on the young Guy de Maupassant, and then look forward to trace Maupassant’s
own literary influence on late 19th and 20th century short fiction. Critics
note the diverse range of characters that populate Maupassant’s stories, which
often explore how ordinary people react to extraordinary situations. Scholars
have examined the wit, social criticism, and psychological insights to be found
in Maupassant’s work. Maupassant is considered a master Realist and his writing
style is economical and understated. Although Maupassant explores many subjects
in his fiction, critics identity three major themes: war, prostitution, and
insanity. Maupassant presents the darker aspects of the human condition, such
as exploitation and infidelity, without moralizing.
