Major Issues
Clarice Lispector is often cited as the most important 20th century contributor
to the development of the psychological novel in Brazil, continuing the work
begun by her predecessor Machado de Assis. Her work presents an intense examination
of her characters’ emotional and psychological responses to external events.
The events themselves, critics observe, are much less important than the inner
reflections and feelings they provoke, usually leading to a moment of catharsis
or epiphany. This emphasis, along with her fragmented, poetic style, was a significant
departure from the realistic, socially concerned fiction of her Brazilian contemporaries.
Lispector’s importance as Brazil’s leading woman author, and her deliberate
choice of female protagonists, have been of considerable interest to feminist
scholars, particularly the French feminist critic Helene Cixous.
