Major Issues

Biographical studies have examined D. H. Lawrence’s fictionalization of his working-class childhood and relationship with his mother in many of his prose works. Other critics have looked to this same material as evidence of Lawrence’s critique of industrialization and class divisions. Scholars are intrigued by Lawrence’s investigation of both social environment and the subconscious as motivators and contributors to individual character and development. The influence of Freudian psychological theories has been analyzed in his writing, as has his depiction of sexuality. Lawrence’s own essays on literature have provided starting points for many studies of his work. The controversial reception of his fiction has lead to innumerable discussions of censorship and the arts.
