Major Issues
Milan Kundera’s life and works have been studied as emblematic of the political
and cultural upheavals in Czechoslovakia in the mid to late 20th century. In
addition to his significant contributions to the literature of his home country,
Kundera has also continued the tradition of European philosophical fiction through
his development of what he calls "the novel as debate." The philosophy that
underlies his writing posits that the limits of human perception render the
world essentially unknowable. Kundera’s works trace the tragedies that follow
from our inevitable misinterpretations of reality. Kundera’s depiction of erotic
relationships to examine human nature has interested feminist critics and others,
as has his portrayal of emotional and domineering women. Scholars have analyzed
Kundera’s use of musical compositions as structuring models for his narratives,
such as his presentation of multiple narrators as variations on a theme.
