Major Issues

Kazuo Ishiguro’s immigration from Japan to England is paralleled in two of his major fictional works, in which the narrator-protagonists have done likewise. The post-World War II experience of Japanese citizens, at home and as immigrants, is a predominant subject in Ishiguro’s work. Reviewers have observed Ishiguro’s subtly effective employment of first person narration; he examines his narrators as they examine their pasts. The past is the strongest force in Ishiguro’s fiction, demanding to be recounted and accounted for. Critics note that through the course of their nostalgic reminiscences, Ishiguro’s narrators make essential discoveries about themselves and their lives. Duty to self, others, and nation have also been identified as an important theme in Ishiguro’s writing.
