Major Issues
Carlos Fuentes’ fascination with revolution, transformation, and liberation
has been observed in both his diplomatic and his literary careers. His writing
is often studied in the context of the 1960s boom in Latin America literature,
to which he was an important contributor. The past, present, and future of his
native Mexico is the subject that dominates his life and work. Critics have
discussed Fuentes’ presentation of Mexican culture, history, external relationships,
national identity, and indigenous mythology. Fuentes’ innovative experimentation
with time, space, perspective, and narrative structure has intrigued reviewers
and scholarly critics. His work is often approached as an example of magic realism,
and the postmodern influence of Jorge Luis Borges on his writing has been noted
by both Fuentes and his critics.
