Feng Jicai’s fiction and nonfiction writing provide an important chronicle of Chinese history, folklore, and the recent and contemporary political and social climate. Critics note, in particular, his collection and record of the horrors, atrocities, and absurdities of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution. Feng’s work is often discussed in the context of other memoirs and accounts of the Cultural Revolution. Feng’s satirical short story "The Street-Sweeping Show" might also be compared with Heinrich Böll’s social satire "Action Will Be Taken."
