Major Issues

The fact that different reviewers refer to the same volume as both prose poetry and short stories indicates the poetic qualities that infuse all of Sandra Cisneros’ work. Cisneros herself has described her fiction as "stories that read like poems" and noted the influence of Jorge Luis Borges on her style. Cultural critics discuss Cisneros in conjunction with other late 20th century Chicana writers and note the bilingualism in her writing. Feminist scholars have examined her portrayal of the place of women in patriarchal Latino society. Cisneros commonly presents the grim realities of poverty and racism through the eyes of its innocent young victims. As reviewers and critics have observed, however, her strong women protagonists have the personal resources that will enable them to escape economic and sexist oppression.
