Major Issues
Socio-economic regionalist might be an appropriate label for Raymond Carver.
As in all great regional writing, the issues and themes that emerge in his fiction
resonate far beyond their particular locale. His working-class protagonists
face class-less problems: the ubiquitous marital, financial, personal, and philosophical
challenges of 20th century life. Carver is most often described as a "minimalist,"
although he himself objected to the belittling connotations of that term. Critics
have compared his spare, economical style to that of Hemingway. The prevailing
tone in much of his work has been called "tragicomic," and scholars have pointed
to the surrealistic humor in his stories. Literary historians place Carver in
the American realism tradition, and point to his influence on late 20th century
short story writers.
