Major Issues
Many critical responses to Angela Carter begin with a consideration of her
work’s gothic elements. Carter’s penchant for portraying the bizarre, the freakish,
the grotesque, and the monstrous has been often noted. In her fictional worlds,
however, it is usually the normal and conventional which are shown to be menacing
and unnatural. Critics have examined Carter’s stories as contemporary examples
of dark fairy tales. Her experimental blending of elements from horror, fantasy,
realistic, and science fiction genres provides her with many angles from which
to explore the relationship between the conscious and unconscious realms. Feminist
critics have studied Carter’s critique of gender construction and iconography.
The sexual, erotic, and violent content of Carter’s fiction has been discussed
by feminist critics and others.
