Albert Camus is the 20th century writer most often associated with the philosophy
of existentialism. Scholars note that Camus’ conviction of the total absence
of super-human meaning or power in the universe results in a careful attention,
in both his fiction and nonfiction writing, to human responsibility for ourselves
and each other. Critics have identified a common pattern in Camus’ short stories,
which typically follow the response of a protagonist suddenly confronted with
the absurd meaninglessness of life. Camus’ focus on human suffering, isolation,
alienation, and helpless vulnerability to uncontrollable, random accidents of
fate has prompted much critical analysis and discussion. His portrayal of French
Algeria has also attracted the attention of postcolonial critics.
