Major Issues

Assessments of Ray Bradbury’s literary accomplishments have been mixed. Some reviewers complain of finding too little science in Bradbury’s science fiction and too much sentimentality. He has also been criticized for sacrificing character development in favor of ideas. Indeed, "idea fiction" is Bradbury’s own description of his writing. Other critics, however, praise Bradbury for his engaging mixture of philosophy and fantasy. Time has been identified as a major theme in Bradbury’s fiction, especially the complex relationship between our personal and collective past and future. Illusion version reality is another common Bradburian theme. Scholars note that Bradbury’s work displays a great faith in humanity, and equally great suspicion of technology. The gothic and supernatural elements of Bradbury’s stories have been analyzed, as has his ongoing interest in childhood and metamorphosis.
