Major Issues
The absence of conventional elements (plot, character, themes) in Donald Barthelme’s
writing makes it difficult for his readers to get their bearings, and makes
it impossible for reviewers and critics to take conventional approaches to his
work. His techniques are sometimes compared to those of Jorge Luis Borges, for
example, but other critics suggest a comparison to 20th century visual artists
would be more appropriate. Barthelme’s style has been described as "zero degree,"
his favored structure as fragmented collage. The reader is bombarded with images,
symbols, phrases, allusions, and soundbites that tempt one to find a meaningful
pattern, but always refuse authoritative confirmation. Scholars suggest that
"the meaning" of many of Barthelme’s works is "meaning" itself: our endless,
impossible quest for interpretive certainty.
