Baldwin’s choice of Harlem as the setting for a number of his literary works has been discussed by his biographical critics and in sociological studies of African American 20th century literature. Critics note his adherence to realistic time-space unity and the causal impetus that drives his plots. Baldwin’s style has garnered critical attention and praise. The quest for individual, ethnic, and cultural identity is a common theme throughout Baldwin’s writing. He is an acclaimed essayist, especially on racial topics. Racial themes also dominate much of his fiction, although he also gives considerable attention to the complexities of sexuality.
