Major Issues

Anjana Appachana’s fiction is often discussed in the context of late 20th century Indian literature. Unlike many of her contemporaries, however, Appachana’s focus is on the domestic rather than the political landscape of modern Indian life. Listening and giving voice to women’s stories has been identified as her predominant literary project. Reviewers describe Appachana’s fiction as realist, although her inclusion of cinematic, melodramatic elements has also been noted. Appachana uses women’s sexuality and relationships—within families and with friends—as her major subjects. Appachana’s ability to capture the rhythms of everyday speech has been praised by reviewers and critics.
