Major Issues
Sherwood Anderson’s unsentimental portrayal of life in small town America has
been praised by reviewers and critics who applaud his ability to capture everyday
speech, his focus on eccentric characters, and his bold depiction of sexuality.
Anderson’s disapproval of urbanization, the late 19th century industrialization
of the MidWest, and the belief in progress as the ultimate good is evident throughout
his writing. Nevertheless, his depiction of rural and small town life is by
no means idyllic. Literary historians note Anderson’s influence on his contemporary
writers, including Faulkner and Hemingway, and on later American practitioners
of the short story.
