Major Issues

It is impossible to read Chinua Achebe outside the historical and social context of African colonialism and independence. Accordingly, the bulk of critical response to Achebe’s work has focused on his portrayal of the colonial and post-colonial African experience. The political, cultural, and spiritual legacy of colonial imperialism provides the conflicts for many of his protagonists. Critics have examined his ability to create compelling, psychologically complex characters, individuals who often find themselves overwhelmed by the forces of history and contemporary political conflicts. Achebe’s significance and influence as the acknowledged father of 20th century African literature in English has been remarked on by critics, who have also focused on his incorporation of African dialect and narrative patterns. The social and historical importance of storytelling is evident both within Achebe’s books and in his own work in carrying on this traditional function.
