This section supplements the discussion and examples of critical approaches to literature found in the anthology. The works listed here explore and/or demonstrate the ten major critical approaches highlighted in your textbook. The annotated bibliography below is limited to just three works for each critical approach; you can find many additional titles in your campus library. A particularly helpful reference book with which to start your research is the Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism (1997), which provides an alphabetical synopsis and bibliography of more than two hundred theories, schools, and critical theorists. The Guide is also available on-line through subscribing institutions.
In addition to the print sources, relevant and useful web-links are also listed here for each variety of criticism. Although the web-links are organized by critical approach, you will find that many websites cover more than one methodology of literary criticism. You will also note a certain overlap and blurring of divisions in the web-site links, as different critics use different labels and classification systems. A good launching point for on-line research into critical literary theory is the Voice of the Shuttle: Literary Theory Page (http://vos.ucsb.edu/shuttle/theory.html). This comprehensive, well-organized gateway site provides links to all manner of critical and theoretical material on the web.
