Mailing Lists

Back

Mailing lists are a great opportunity to interact with other members of the online writing community, to learn what instructors are doing in their classes at other institutions. We recommend that new subscribers to these lists take some time to "lurk" and become acquainted with the group dynamics before jumping into the discussion. Each Internet mailing list has its own peculiar flavor and culture. To join the mailing lists below, first send a message to the list server address provided with "help" in the body of the message. The server will automatically send you a message that contains all of the list management commands, including instructions on how to subscribe.

ACW-L: Alliance for Computers and Writing
listproc@listserv.ttu.edu

ACW-L is one of the most popular mailing lists in the online college composition community. It is read not just by composition instructors interested in computer-aided instruction, but also by administrators, publishers, and software makers. During the academic year it is not unusual to receive between 50-100 messages a day from the list, especially when they hit a hot topic.

ECOMP-L: College English Composition Discussion List
LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU

Discussions on ECOMP-L deal mostly with teaching, pedagogy, and classroom management issues. Subscribers are mostly high school and college instructors of composition and rhetoric. Traffic on this list varies a great deal.

GRADTALK
majordomo@lists.ncte.org

GRADTALK is a new arrival, created specifically for graduate students interested in rhetoric and composition studies. This list is still establishing its identity at this time, but since graduate students are generally net savvy and enthusiastic about teaching and research, this list will surely have a bright future.

Humanist Discussion List

Humanist is a truly international moderated mailing list for Humanities scholars interested in technology, pedagogy, and research issues. Since Humanist is moderated, discussions here are generally more formal and polite than on other lists, though they are usually just as lively. Humanist does not deal with writing and composition issues directly, though most of the discussions will be of interest to humanities instructors.

RHETNT-L: RhetNet: A Cyberjournal for Rhetoric and Writing
listserv@mizzou1.missouri.edu

This is a general rhetoric and composition list, mostly for college writing instructors. Many of the subscribers to this list also follow ACW-L and WPA-L. Traffic levels vary.

WAC-L Writing Across the Curriculum
LISTSERV@POSTOFFICE.CSO.UIUC.EDU

WAC-L is another list that is active mostly during the academic year. Most of the subscribers at the present time seem to be from the rhetoric and composition field.

WPA-L Writing Program Administration
LISTSERV@lists.asu.edu

Though this is a list for writing program administrators, the topics discussed here will be of interest to anyone involved in teaching rhetoric and composition. This list stays active during the entire calendar year.

WWWEDU: World Wide Web Education List
listproc@ready.cpb.org

This is a moderated list on instructional Web technology and pedagogical issues. Subscribers include instructors, administrators, and trainers from secondary and higher education, in all disciplines.

WWWDEV: World Wide Web Courseware Developers Listserv

This list deals with technical issues involved in developing Web-based courses. Though many of the discussions here are about Web Courseware packages, such as WebCT, WBT, and the rest, other discussions delve into pedagogical, practical, and administrative issues as well.
