Explosion On The Maine

This illustration dramatizes the explosion on the USS Maine in Havana harbor February 1898, killing over 250 American sailors. Theodore Roosevelt, then serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, proclaimed, without any evidence, "The Maine was sunk by an act of dirty treachery on the part of the Spanish."
